Officers from Rethymno proceeded to arrest a 32-year-old man, who is alleged to have participated as a "collector" in two instances of telephone fraud that took place on 18 and 19 June.

According to findings from the investigation, unknown callers contacted the victims posing as officials. Using false claims about impending thefts, they persuaded the victims to place valuables, jewellery and money at specific locations. The arrested man is alleged to have subsequently collected the items from those locations.

The value of the stolen goods is estimated at close to €50,000, including gold sovereigns and precious jewellery.

Immediately after the individual was identified, the 32-year-old was located and taken to a police station. Officers retrieved from a remote location near Rethymno part of the stolen goods—specifically jewellery and 38 gold sovereigns—which were returned to their owners.

Authorities are now investigating the possible involvement of other persons, as well as the possibility that the arrested man was involved in similar cases.
