A 30-year-old man, a foreign national, was apprehended by police in Piraeus during an operation. The arrested man was a member of a group that defrauded unsuspecting citizens through telephone calls, and the operation resulted in the complete identification and dissolution of the criminal organisation.
The group's criminal activity had begun at least since April 2025. The 30-year-old and his accomplice posed as representatives of state services with responsibility for crime prosecution. They called women by telephone and, using false claims about dangers facing them or their relatives, pressured them to hand over sums of money and valuable objects.
One of the targeted women detected the fraud and immediately informed the prosecuting authorities. Following the instructions of the officers, she pretended to comply with the extortionists' instructions. When the young man arrived at the meeting point to collect the bag with the valuables, the police officers who were monitoring the situation moved in and arrested him.
According to information obtained from the investigation, the organisation had committed twenty-nine instances of fraud and extortion in Athens and Thessaloniki. Total illegal gains are estimated at 690,000 euros. Stolen goods were transferred abroad by one member of the group to another, with the aim of obscuring the trail. Communications were carried out through connections with foreign telephone codes.
At the residence of the arrested man, authorities found and seized 7,060 euros in cash as well as several items of jewellery. The perpetrator was taken before the prosecutor, whilst the search for the remaining members of the group continues.
