Four arrests for series of frauds against elderly people in Attica
Four men were arrested on the afternoon of 1 November in Acharnes and Zephyri, following an organised operation by the Kifisia Crime Investigation and Solution Department, with the assistance of the corresponding Zephyri service. According to Dikastiko.gr, they are members of a criminal organisation that defrauded elderly people in areas of Attica, with total illegal financial gain exceeding €125,000.
The four defendants are 45, 44, 42 and 37 years old. The police investigation led to the solving of 25 cases of fraud and theft attributed to the organisation.
Modus operandi
According to police, members of the organisation operated mainly during morning hours, moving in pairs by car. They targeted exclusively elderly people, posing as accountants or associates of their relatives, in order to gain their trust.
After achieving initial contact, the perpetrators used various pretexts to convince the victims to get into their vehicle. They then transported them to banks, ATMs or to their homes, where they obtained money and jewellery. In some cases, the perpetrators themselves took money or other valuable items without the consent of the victims.
Findings from searches
During searches of the residences of the arrested persons, €5,000 in cash was seized, the vehicle used by the group, jewellery and gold items, four mobile phones, as well as clothing that is said to have been used in the commission of the offences.
A case file was drawn up against the four arrested persons for founding and participating in a criminal organisation that committed distinct thefts and frauds in a continuous and professional manner. The defendants were brought before the competent prosecutor.
