Helmeted assailants attacked students during General Assembly at NKUA

At least three students were injured on Wednesday, 4 November, when dozens of helmeted assailants forcefully stormed the amphitheatre of the Mathematics Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. According to In.gr, the attack occurred during a General Assembly of the student union, which had been convened ahead of events marking the Polytechnic anniversary.

The SYRIZA Left Coalition (SYRIZA LA) condemned "unequivocally" the events in a joint statement from the Sectors of Education and Youth. "The attack against students constitutes an abhorrent exercise of violence against the entire academic community, against the University as a space of knowledge production and freedom, against democracy itself," the statement said characteristically.

SYRIZA LA places the incident within a broader context of pressure on the student movement. "This attempt at intimidation is occurring at a time when young people, in our country and internationally, are at the forefront of demands against social inequality, rising prices, the housing crisis, corruption and the degradation of public education," the signatories state.

In the same statement, SYRIZA LA states that it stands "unflinchingly and firmly" against any attempt to intimidate the student movement — "in amphitheatres, in classrooms, in public space, inside and outside schools and universities". At the same time, it expresses solidarity with NKUA students and wishes a speedy recovery for those injured.

"Criminal violence against democracy and the demands of the student movement, as well as the attempt to discredit collective democratic processes, will not pass," the statement concludes.
