Police are investigating two hand-grenade attacks on catering establishments in the early hours of Tuesday, with focus on a known criminal held behind bars.

Two hand-grenade attacks on catering establishments, which occurred with a half-hour interval in the early hours of Tuesday, are under police investigation. The targets were businesses on Acharnes Street and America Square.
According to In.gr, the similarities between the two attacks have led the Hellenic Police to conclude that the perpetrators are the same and that the same moral instigator is involved. The police authorities have gathered visual material from the attack sites and the wider area, with the aim of recording the perpetrators' route and identifying them.
In video footage in the possession of police, a man dressed in black with his facial features covered approaches the establishments, breaks the glass with a manhole cover grating and throws a hand grenade inside. A deafening explosion followed, with pavements filled with broken glass and overturned chairs.
According to reports by MEGA, the authorities have focused on one of the most notorious criminals, who is serving a prison sentence for involvement in cases of homicides, extortion and prison unrest. Investigators are not ruling out the scenario in which the detainee in question had sent extortion demands through third parties to the shop owners, and the attacks represented a "response" to their refusal.
This scenario is reinforced by the fact that one of the two businessmen is believed to have received threats from the same detainee in the past, according to information being examined by the Hellenic Police.
