A central point in the investigation into the death of a baby found in a freezer in a flat in Kypseli is the role of a 26-year-old Afghan, according to reports by huffingtonpost.gr. The man was arrested together with the 43-year-old father and 38-year-old mother of the child, as well as two of the three minors found in the flat on Thassos Street.
The three adults had initially been remanded in custody on charges of drug trafficking and failure to report the discovery of a dead body — charges which they denied, claiming they were drug users and not traffickers. The case took a new turn with murder charges brought against the couple, whilst the 26-year-old was summoned before an examining magistrate to answer for sexual acts against the couple's 15-year-old daughter, who is in her fourth month of pregnancy.
From "acquaintance of a year" to cohabitation since 2022
During his testimony, the 26-year-old stated that his relationship with the minor began approximately a year prior and that he was unaware of the dead baby's existence in the freezer. The 43-year-old father supported this position in his statement: "The baby was not crying. It was as if it was in aphasia. I became frightened and began to massage it as doctors had shown me. Its eyes were open, it was not moving them," he said regarding the baby's final moments.
However, new evidence presented by the programme "Live News" partly overturns this picture. The lawyer of the 38-year-old mother announced that the couple now maintains that the 26-year-old Afghan had cohabited with them in their previous house, where the baby's murder is said to have occurred in 2022. This account stands in direct contradiction to the initial statements of both parents, which had placed their acquaintance with the Afghan approximately a year prior.
The 43-year-old had characteristically stated: "My daughter had left home eight months ago with him and in the end I accepted them back and they stayed with us for the last year." If it is confirmed that the Afghan had been living with the family since 2022, the authorities are called upon to answer the question as to why the parents initially stated a much more recent acquaintance.
Conflicting accounts regarding the baby's death
Beyond the question of the temporal relationship with the 26-year-old, the statements of the two parents present significant contradictions as to the actual circumstances of the baby's death.
The 43-year-old stated that the child died in June 2022, late in the evening, whilst the entire family was at the table and a sudden noise was heard from the crib. The 38-year-old, by contrast, claimed that she was absent at that time and that the death occurred in 2023, possibly in June.
"The baby died in 2023, I think in June. I did not tell the police because I wanted to keep it close to me. I also feared that the police would take my other two children," the 38-year-old stated. According to her account, the baby had experienced abdominal pain and fever, her husband had massaged its abdomen, and she found it dead shortly afterwards.
The two parents therefore disagree both on the year of death — 2022 versus 2023 — and on the presence or absence of the mother at that time, whilst both continue to categorically deny that they committed murder.
Authorities examine contradictions comprehensively
