A foreign national was arrested in Edessa for telephone fraud targeting elderly women after first causing a traffic accident involving four vehicles whilst attempting to escape.

Police in Edessa arrested a foreign man who is alleged to have defrauded elderly women over the telephone by posing as an accountant.
The arrest took place in dramatic circumstances. When police officers signalled him to stop, the suspect accelerated and collided with a parked vehicle. He subsequently caused damage to two other cars and a motorcycle.
Before his arrest, an accomplice had made a telephone call to an elderly woman in a village in Pella. The accomplice lied to her that her son had been arrested and faced imprisonment. In this way, they managed to take three gold sovereigns and jewellery worth €5,000 from her. The valuable items were collected by the man who was arrested.
The pair attempted to defraud two other elderly women in the city of Edessa, but did not succeed.
Following his arrest, the authorities found two gold sovereigns and part of the jewellery in his possession, which were returned to the victim. Two mobile phones and €600 were also seized. The car he was driving had been stolen from a rental company.
Police are continuing their investigation to locate his accomplice and to determine whether they are involved in other similar cases. The arrested man will be brought before the prosecutor facing charges of fraud, embezzlement and disobedience.
