Petrol bomb attack on Migration Minister's office in central Athens
An improvised incendiary device consisting of two petrol bombs was placed in the early hours of Sunday (1/11) at the entrance of the political office of Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Pleuris, on Alexandrou Soutso street in Kolonaki. According to In.gr, the incident occurred at approximately 2:15.
The explosion caused damage to the entrance door and broke windows. Pleuris himself stated that the attack took place shortly after he had left the premises.
Pleuris's response and police findings
The minister published photographs of the damage and posted a comment on social media, arguing that the manner in which the devices were placed indicates homicidal intent. He attributed the action to "supporters of illegal migrants", adding: "I don't care about these scum. I scare them and they don't scare me".
Police officers from the Explosives Disposal Unit rushed to the scene and conducted an inspection. During the investigation, residue from petrol bombs was found, as well as other evidence pointing to an incendiary action. Warning notices were placed at the entrance regarding the risk of injury from broken glass.
No permanent security at the office
Greek Police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidi, speaking to ERT, confirmed that there was no permanent security at Pleuris's office. The preliminary investigation has been undertaken by the State Security Directorate of the Hellenic Police General Directorate. Police are seeking video footage from security cameras and testimonies that could lead to the identification of the perpetrator or perpetrators.
Condemnation from New Democracy
In a statement, New Democracy characterised the attack as "a fascist act of cowardly thugs" and called on all parties to express their "clear and strong" disapproval and condemnation. "Our Democracy and those who serve it are neither intimidated nor frightened by its enemies", the statement read.
