Knife Attack at Mandras Police Station: 31-year-old in ICU, Policeman Released

A 31-year-old burst into Mandras Police Station with a knife and was wounded by gunfire from a police officer. He is hospitalised on a ventilator in intensive care, whilst the policeman was released free by order of the prosecutor.

Case file opened for attempted murder following knife attack in Mandras

A case file has been opened against the 31-year-old who burst into Mandras Police Station with a knife for attempted wilful murder and repeated offence, disruption of a public service's operation and breaches of the weapons law, according to ERT News.

In parallel, a case file has also been opened against the police officer who shot the 31-year-old for breach of the Weapons Law. The prosecutor verbally ordered his release.

The injured man in intensive care

The 31-year-old is hospitalised on a ventilator and under guard in the Intensive Care Unit of Asclepieion Hospital in Voula. He underwent surgery late Friday evening, however his condition was deemed so serious that he remained in intensive care.

Timeline of the attack

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, 4 September. The 31-year-old, who according to ERT News reports is dealing with psychological problems, entered the Police Station whilst holding a knife and moved towards the duty officer, whom he threatened directly.

The sergeant and other police officers at the station attempted to immobilise him, without success. The man was then directed to the first floor, where the Security Division was located, and police officers trapped him in a room.

Despite repeated orders to drop the knife and comply, the 31-year-old did not respond. He broke down the door of the room and threw a flowerpot; fragments from the broken glass wounded a police officer.

Continuing to move threateningly with the knife in his hand, the 31-year-old was shot in the abdominal area by a police officer at the station.
