According to Newsit.gr, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis gave his own account of the circumstances of singer Giorgos Mazonakis's death in a social media post.
Georgiadis stated that "according to initial information, Giorgos Mazonakis suffered cardiac arrest at a supposed clinic during a procedure, allegedly plasmapheresis". The exact causes of death, he noted, would be clarified by forensic medical investigation.
Illegal procedure at simple pathology clinic
According to the minister, the operating licence for the facility concerned a simple pathology clinic, where such a type of medical procedure is not permitted. "A medical procedure of this type is not permitted to be performed at a simple clinic," he stated characteristically.
Georgiadis announced that he had requested the President of the Athens Medical Association to immediately begin the required inspection, emphasising that responsibility for inspecting clinics belongs to the local Medical Associations. The inspection procedure, as he noted, has already begun.
Security took up the investigation
The case has been taken up by security forces, who are examining all medical equipment that was used in the anti-ageing treatment, as well as the medicines that may have been administered to the singer. At the same time, an investigation is being conducted into whether plasmapheresis could legally have been performed at a private clinic or whether hospital infrastructure is required, and whether all necessary safety measures had been taken.
Mazonakis is reported to have suffered the cardiac arrest at the clinic of the doctor who was treating him, before being transferred to Elpis Hospital, where doctors were unable to bring him back to life despite their efforts.
Warning to patients
The minister issued a warning to citizens: "I call on patients to be careful about what they read on the internet and not to risk their health in doubtful conditions." He also expressed his condolences to the family of Mazonakis and to his friends.
Questions about the exact circumstances of the death remain open, whilst the forensic medical investigation and police enquiry are ongoing.
