Crete: Mother and partner remanded in custody over violent abuse of 3-year-old child
Judicial authorities in Chania have decided on the provisional detention of a young woman and her partner following the conclusion of their testimony. The couple is accused of attempted murder with malice against a minor, as well as other offences for which they have already been convicted at first instance.
The case came to light when the young girl was admitted to hospital with serious injuries. Attending doctors discovered severe findings indicating violent abuse, contradicting the parents' initial claims of accidental injury sustained at a play area.
The child had a subdural haematoma to the head and was initially hospitalised in critical condition. She has since been extubated and her condition is described as mild.
During the proceedings, the 25-year-old woman, represented by a solicitor, and her partner denied any knowledge of the circumstances that led to the injury. The young man claimed he was at work in a greenhouse and was notified by telephone by his partner.
Results of genetic tests from DNA samples taken from the family's four children, the mother, and the accused are pending. The woman claims that all the children are biologically his partner's, who is from Pakistan.
The remaining minor members of the family are being temporarily housed in a nursing institution in Chania, whilst the Social Service has assumed responsibility for their care.
