According to newsbeast.gr, new evidence overturns the picture of the 26-year-old Afghan who was arrested along with the parents of the dead infant in Kypseli, shortly before the accused give statements before the examining magistrate.
The 43-year-old and the 38-year-old now claim they have known the Afghan since 2022 – and not only from the past year, as they are reportedly said to have initially stated. Their lawyer clarified that the 26-year-old lived in the same house during the disputed period: "Not only do they know him from that point in time, but he also lived there in the house. I cannot tell you anything more than that, however."
The same lawyer announced that he will ultimately not undertake the defence of the Afghan, as the couple no longer wishes joint legal representation with him.
Conflicting accounts of the time and circumstances of death
The two parents do not even agree on when the infant died. The 43-year-old places the death in June 2022, between 20:00 and 21:00, whilst the 38-year-old states that the event occurred an entire year later, in 2023.
The man describes the family being at the table when he heard a loud noise from the cot. He approached the child, which had its eyes open but was unresponsive, and attempted to revive it with massage and artificial respiration, until he established an absence of pulse.
The 38-year-old gives an entirely different account: she claims she was not present in the space when the child died and saw it dead afterwards. She also states that the infant showed abdominal pain and fever, and explains that she did not reveal its death because she feared the authorities would take her other two children away.
Change in stance towards the Afghan – Possible shifting of responsibility
The new version about the 26-year-old comes precisely before his statement and is expected to be examined by the examining authorities. The question posed is whether the changed claims constitute an attempt to shift responsibility or whether the couple is now providing a more complete picture of the people who were in the house during that period.
The authorities are examining the claims of the accused overall whilst simultaneously considering the statements of the children, forensic findings and material from social media.
Particular weight is now being attached to the presence of the Afghan in the house during the disputed period, given that he himself has been in custody since the time of his arrest along with the couple.
