37-year-old remanded in custody for murder and mutilation of 24-year-old in Thermaic Gulf
A 37-year-old Pakistani man was remanded in custody on suspicion of murdering his compatriot, whose mutilated body was discovered in the Thermaic Gulf.
Remand in custody for murder of 24-year-old in Thermaic Gulf — four years after body discovered
The first examining magistrate of Thessaloniki ordered the remand in custody of the 37-year-old Pakistani man following his testimony regarding the murder of his 24-year-old compatriot. According to businessdaily.gr, the case concerns the mutilated body that was discovered four years ago in the maritime area between Kalochori and Chalestra, in the northwestern section of the Thermaic Gulf.
The suspect was arrested last week by officers from the Organised Crime Confrontation Sub-Directorate of Northern Greece. The arrest came after a months-long investigation by the Crimes Against Life and Personal Freedom Office, in cooperation with the Criminal Investigation Sub-Directorate of Northern Greece and the Coast Guard.
According to the authorities' findings, the motive for the homicide is believed to have been the victim's romantic relationship with the suspect's partner. The 24-year-old is said to have been abducted and murdered in the Kalochori area. Three other compatriots of the 37-year-old are also being prosecuted in connection with the same case.
According to the police investigation, the perpetrators attempted to cover their tracks: they removed a small boat from the crime scene and threw the body into the sea after tying weights to it. The corpse was retrieved without a head and lower limbs, a fact which significantly hindered identification. Police ultimately managed to identify the victim through fingerprints and laboratory analysis.
During his testimony, the 37-year-old denied the charges of homicide; however, his explanations did not convince the judicial authorities, who decided to detain him.
