Coastguard officers arrested a 41-year-old Greek national in Rafina for possession of narcotic substances worth over €200,000, following a search of a passenger ferry with the assistance of a police dog.

Coastguard officers proceeded to arrest a 41-year-old male, Greek national, in the afternoon of the previous day at Rafina port. The matter concerns a breach of legislation governing addictive substances.

As part of inspections to combat illegal activities, employees of the Regional Drug Prosecution Unit together with security personnel from the local port authority inspected a passenger-car ferry vessel that was in the bay. The search was carried out with the assistance of a trained detection dog, which showed interest in the baggage of the said passenger.

From the search it emerged that the 41-year-old was in possession of quantities of prohibited substances, whose commercial value is calculated at €207,400. The authorities also seized a mobile telephone that belonged to the arrested person.

The Central Port Authority of Rafina is conducting a preliminary investigation into the matter.
