Two women arrested for fraud using 'fake accountant' scam against 70-year-old in Serres
Two women aged 20 and 26 were arrested in Serres for defrauding a 70-year-old using the 'accountant' method, obtaining €11,010 in cash and jewellery worth approximately €5,000.
'Accountant' fraud in Lefkona: two arrests following theft of money and jewellery
Police officers from the Crimes Investigation and Prosecution Unit of Serres arrested two women, aged 20 and 26, on Friday afternoon for defrauding a 70-year-old resident of Lefkona, Serres. According to ERT, the perpetrators operated using the well-known 'accountant' method.
An accomplice of the two women contacted the elderly woman by telephone, posing as an accountant. Under the pretext that the tax authority had ordered him to record the money and jewellery that were stored in the house, he persuaded the 70-year-old to collect them in a bag. The bag contained cash totalling €11,010 and jewellery with an estimated value of approximately €5,000. Following telephone instructions, the victim placed the bag at a location that had been indicated to her.
Shortly afterwards, one of the two women appeared at the location and is alleged to have collected the items. The unusual activity in the area aroused the suspicions of neighbours, who immediately alerted the police. Officers were mobilised quickly and located the first woman almost immediately — the stolen items were found in her possession and were returned to the victim.
The second woman was located in a nearby area, where she is alleged to have been waiting for her accomplice. Following the investigation that ensued, two mobile phones were also seized from the possession of the two arrested women.
The case file that was formed against them will bring both before the Prosecutor of the Court of First Instance of Serres.
