Four police officers sent to trial over the murder of Kyriaki Griva in Agios Anargyros
Kyriaki Griva's father is calling for punishment of the four police officers sent to trial for fatal negligence by a person with a duty of care.
Griva's father: "No one took the slightest action to save my daughter"
Four police officers from the Agios Anargyros department have been sent to trial for fatal negligence by a person with a duty of care, in connection with the handling of Kyriaki Griva's case shortly before her murder by her former partner in 2024. According to Dikastiko.gr, Kyriaki's father, Thanasis Griva, commented on the development while speaking to ERT news.
"These police officers must be punished, because an innocent life was lost through their hands," Griva stated. "My daughter went to the department to seek help and no one took the slightest action to save her."
He noted that the police officers claimed before the court that they performed their duty. "And I ask, if they did their duty, where is my daughter now? My daughter is in her grave and she is decomposing, rotting day by day more," he added.
"They looked at me in a demeaning way"
Griva also described the attitude of the police officers during the court proceedings. "They came to court and they looked at me in a demeaning way, as if I had caused them harm, like they were saying, mate, what have you got us into now? What is this you're doing with your daughter? We were doing fine," he said.
The victim's father also emphasised that "if it had been him, the police might have acted sooner," referring to the perpetrator.
Call for harsher sentences
Griva stated that his daughter's case should not remain isolated. "Kyriaki was not the last. Penalties need to become stricter, they should be life sentences," he stressed. He also appealed to women facing violence: "I want all girls to find the strength to go to the police."
At the same time, he clarified that he is not generalising about the entire police force. "The police is not just these four officers. There are also officers who have given their lives and their souls and have died on the road while on duty," he concluded.
Statement from the family
Following the referral to trial, Kyriaki's family issued a statement through the lawyers of her father and her sister, Eleni Mazaraki and Chrysovalanthi Glinou. "Following the referral of the four police officers to trial for a felony, the Judicial Council determined that there is sufficient evidence for them to be tried for fatal negligence by a person with a duty of care," the family stated.
"Kyriaki's family sees justice taking steps of truth and accountability," the statement continues. "With absolute respect for the judicial process and the presumption of innocence, we will continue to pursue full clarification and the justice she deserves."
Trial at second instance in September
The referral of the four police officers comes as the trial for the murder case itself is scheduled to begin at second instance on 23 September. For Kyriaki Griva's death, her former partner has already been sentenced to life imprisonment, having been found to be the principal perpetrator of the crime.
