Thessaloniki: Young man arrested for series of robberies targeting elderly
Police officers from the Thessaloniki Police Directorate proceeded to arrest a 26-year-old man, whom they identified as responsible for multiple thefts committed with violence inside apartment blocks. The victims of the attacks were predominantly elderly women residing in the city centre area.
The criminal activity of the arrested man extends over the period between 10 May and 3 June of the current year. During these weeks, the perpetrator broke into four different buildings, threatening and assaulting residents. From these attacks he obtained money and jewellery, with the total value of his haul estimated at more than seven thousand euros. In some cases, the unprovoked aggression he displayed endangered the physical integrity of the victims.
The arrest operation was carried out yesterday, on 23 June 2026, in the afternoon, in the Sykies area. When police officers from the Crime Prevention and Suppression Department attempted to check him, the young man resisted strongly, struck the officers and attempted to escape. He was eventually restrained and taken to a police station, where he was charged with resistance to authority and disobedience.
The arrested man faces criminal prosecution for armed robbery as a continuing offence. The case file compiled against him will be forwarded to the competent prosecutor.
