Three arrested in Phthiotis for fraud involving "tax authority satellite"
Three perpetrators were arrested in flagrante delicto in Phthiotis after attempting to steal money and jewellery under the pretext of a "tax authority satellite".
Arrest of three fraudsters in Lamia following police operation
Three suspects — two men and one woman — were arrested in flagrante delicto in Phthiotis on the afternoon of 4 September after attempting to collect a bag containing items they believed to be money and valuables. According to Newsit.gr, the operation was carried out by police officers from the Lamia Subdivision for Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes, and a case file was opened against the three for attempted fraud in conspiracy and forgery.
According to police, shortly before the arrest, an unknown associate of the suspects contacted a resident of the area by telephone, presenting himself as an accountant. He asked him to place money and jewellery in a bag and leave it outside his house, on the pretext that the items would be recorded by a "tax authority satellite".
The citizen immediately realised this was an attempted fraud and notified the authorities. Following instructions from police, he placed items of no value in the bag and left it at the designated spot outside his house.
A short time later, a car with two of the suspects arrived at the location and attempted to collect the bag. Police officers monitoring the area immobilised them and arrested them. At the same time, the third suspect was located and arrested near the spot.
During a search of the vehicle and the suspects' possession, four mobile telephones, SIM cards, €381.70 and toll receipts were seized — items which, according to police, are connected to their movement from Attica to Phthiotis. The passenger car was also seized, which bore registration plates of questionable authenticity, placed with a magnet over the genuine ones.
The three arrested individuals were taken to the Court of First Instance Prosecutor's Office in Lamia.
