Phishing fraud in Split, Trogir and Hvar: three victims lost €17,100
Three Dalmatians became victims of fake SMS messages and internet fraud, with total damages amounting to €17,100. Split police are warning citizens about such scams.
Fake SMS messages and internet scams rob three Dalmatians
The Split-Dalmatia Police Administration received reports in recent days from three citizens from Split, Trogir and Hvar who became victims of computer fraud. According to a report from Friday, as reported by 24sata, the total damage amounts to €17,100.
In the first case, a 56-year-old man from the Trogir area lost almost €16,000. He believed he had received an SMS message from his bank and via a provided link allegedly deactivated his account and the OTP GO application — acting according to the fraudsters' instructions, after which unauthorised transactions followed.
The second case involves a 48-year-old woman from Split who received a fake SMS message claiming she had committed a traffic violation and that penalties would increase if she did not pay the fine immediately. By clicking on a link that imitated an official website, she entered her personal and banking details and authorised transactions. €670 was taken from her account.
In the third case, a 44-year-old man from Hvar was deceived in early June 2026 by an unknown person and transferred €500 via PaysafeCard and Select Pay systems.
Split police emphasise that in all cases the perpetrators used fake SMS messages and internet links that imitate official institutions in order to obtain citizens' personal and banking data.
Police stress that they never send notifications about violations via SMS messages and urge citizens not to open suspicious links and not to enter sensitive data on websites accessed via SMS or unknown email.
