Vinko Grgić wins election in Nova Gradiška despite arrest on corruption charges
Independent list candidate Vinko Grgić secured around 58% of votes in the early election for mayor of Nova Gradiška. Grgić resigned earlier following his arrest in a corruption investigation.
Grgić returns to lead Nova Gradiška with 58 per cent of votes
According to unofficial results cited by Index.hr, Independent list candidate Vinko Grgić won the second round of the early local election for mayor of Nova Gradiška with approximately 58 per cent of votes. Alongside him, deputy candidate Sabina Vlaović was elected.
His rival Bernardin Trnka from the HDZ, who ran together with deputy candidate Bruno Bušić, received 38.41 per cent of votes.
At the early election held on Sunday, 11,298 voters were entitled to vote. Voting took place at 27 polling stations in the city, open from 7 to 19 o'clock.
The city electoral commission is still awaiting a decision on a possible re-run of voting at polling station number 23, Prognaničko settlement in Kovačevac, due to reported irregularities.
The early election was called after Grgić resigned from his position as mayor in early March. The reason for the resignation was his arrest as part of an investigation into suspected corruption offences, following which the Government of the Republic of Croatia called new elections.
This is not the first time Grgić has left office under similar circumstances — he also resigned in October 2020. However, he won again at the 2021 election, and repeated his convincing victory at last year's regular election.
