Prosecutor accuses two Hungast executives of corruption
The Central Investigation Prosecutor's Office has brought in and charged two executives of one of Hungary's largest catering companies with corruption. According to the accusation, the men passed bribes to municipal decision-makers so that the company would obtain and retain public procurement contracts – reports Telex.
According to the suspicion, the money transfers took place in Budapest's second and third districts and in Pécs. The aim was for the company to win catering tenders, extend existing agreements, and modify terms in its own favour. The sum is estimated at tens of millions of forints.
During the investigation, authorities conducted a coordinated operation in early June: seventy police officers and investigators carried out house searches in the capital and in the Baranya county seat. The company's owner and one director were taken into custody at that time.
Hungast responded to the proceedings with a statement. The company said that, as this is an ongoing legal matter, it does not wish to comment further. It added that it has no additional information regarding the claims published in the media, though it is fully cooperating with authorities.
The company emphasised that its operations are stable and that it fulfils its obligations to partners and institutions in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. The operation of the canteens is continuing in the usual manner.
In connection with the case, several politicians have previously been arrested, including the current mayor of the second district and the former mayor of the third district. The investigation is being directed by the Central Investigation Prosecutor's Office.
