Dangerous metal objects found in children's Halloween sweets in Gyömrő
In five specific cases, dangerous metal objects were found in children's Halloween sweets in Gyömrő and the neighbouring Péterin, according to 24.hu. The Pest County Police Headquarters statement says the Monor Police Captaincy has initiated criminal proceedings on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm by an unknown perpetrator.
Gyömrő City Council became aware of three reports on 1 November. At a Halloween sweet collection event held in the Liget residential park in Gyömrő, dangerous metal objects were concealed in sweets: a nail was found in one, a screw in another, and a piece of wire in the third. In the hours that followed, additional families also filed complaints, including a resident of Péterin whose child likewise found metal in a sweet.
According to the police statement, an unknown perpetrator concealed sharp metal objects – needles and nails – in sweets placed at the street Halloween event in Gyömrő. Multiple participants in the event may have consumed the sweets or taken them away with them.
The council was also informed that during the Halloween event, a child fell ill and required medical attention. It has not yet been established whether the illness is connected to the sweets.
Mayor Szabolcs Kisberk declared zero tolerance towards actions endangering the physical integrity of children in the published statement. He is asking parents to carefully check the sweets collected by their children and to discuss the importance of caution with them.
The authorities are questioning multiple groups as witnesses. They are awaiting reports from those who saw the sweets being placed or noticed suspicious persons at the event. They are also seeking those who consumed sweets from the location or found foreign objects in them. Police are also asking drivers in the area to assist the investigation with footage from their dash-cameras.
Reports can be made on the toll-free "Telefontanú" helpline on 06-80-555-111, the emergency number 112, or by telephone on 06-27-505-600. People can also report in person during office hours at the Monor Police Captaincy. Anonymity is guaranteed on all channels. Authorities request that everyone preserves the affected sweets and their packaging for the official investigation.
