The defendant accused of a 2022 killing in Zugló has been placed under criminal supervision after the maximum four-year pre-trial detention expired.

The Budapest Metropolitan Court decided to place under criminal supervision a man accused of the 2022 killing in Zugló. The decision comes after the maximum four-year pre-trial detention permitted under criminal procedure law expired – according to reporting by RTL Híradó via HVG.
The defendant, C. Károly, may now move freely around Budapest, but cannot cross the city's boundaries. Additionally, he must report to police every other day. The court spokesperson, József Szabó, emphasised that under law, someone can be held in pre-trial detention for this length of time in cases of suspected murder.
However, the prosecution disagrees with the ruling. They have appealed and seek to have the man confined to his apartment and required to wear an electronic monitoring device.
According to the charges, C. Károly strangled his live-in partner in their home in the 14th district in April 2022. At the moment the killing took place, the woman's young son, a nine-year-old child, was also in the apartment. After committing the crime, the man went to a cinema, where investigators later apprehended him.
The victim's mother recently filed a complaint against the defendant. She alleges that the man attempted to persuade her and her granddaughter to make certain statements. C. Károly denies this and rejects all charges brought against him.
