A 28-year-old motorist has been stopped by the State Police for hitting a young man of 29 years old in Corso Italia, in the centre of Genoa's nightlife district. The incident occurred at around 4:30 in the morning on Saturday 13 June, near a late-night venue in the eastern part of the city.
Investigators reconstructed that, before the impact, the driver had attempted to strike up a conversation with a girl inside the nightclub. The young woman's friends did not appreciate the approach and attempted to attack him. To escape, the 28-year-old ran to his vehicle and attempted to flee at high speed.
During the escape, he struck the 29-year-old man who was standing near the parking spaces along Corso Italia, heading westbound. As he fell to the ground, the victim struck his head forcefully against the asphalt.
The police units from the UPGSP, who arrived following a report, found the injured man lying on the ground with serious wounds. He was taken urgently to San Martino hospital in critical condition, where doctors kept him under guarded prognosis.
Officers then identified and apprehended the person responsible. Tests carried out revealed that the driver had a blood alcohol level of 1.15, almost five times the legal limit for newly licensed drivers. He was therefore arrested.
The investigation continues to establish precisely what happened. Police also launched administrative checks on the safety of the venues involved.
