A 26-year-old man, Genti Berisha, has been placed under house arrest with electronic monitoring following the death of a local police officer who died during a motorcycle pursuit. The decision was made by the judge for preliminary investigations in Milan, Giulia Masci, who validated the detention.
The incident occurred when officer Francesco Imprezzabile, riding his motorcycle, was pursuing the suspect, who had continued driving despite a signal to stop. During the pursuit, reaching speeds of 180 kilometres per hour, the local police officer lost control of the vehicle and fell, sustaining fatal injuries.
Initially the public prosecutor had requested imprisonment, but subsequently changed their position in favour of the less restrictive measure. This was because the young man admitted his responsibilities during interrogation and his relatives offered suitable accommodation for serving the sentence at the family home.
The judge would not have been able to impose a more severe measure than that proposed by the prosecution. The charges contested include driving whilst fleeing with danger to public safety and death as an outcome of criminal conduct.
