On Friday evening, in the Baths of Caracalla area in Rome, a traffic police officer set off fireworks without permission, causing panic among dozens of horses that were participating in rehearsals for the Republic Day parade. At least four people were injured, two seriously.
The incident occurred around 23:30, while mounted units of the army, carabinieri and police were preparing for the 2 June procession. The explosions frightened the animals: some had riders mounted on them, whilst others were being led by hand.
In the chaos generated by the horses fleeing, several animals were injured. One horse suffered broken ribs and a damaged lung. Among the injured people are also two mounted carabinieri.
The authorities have opened an investigation into the episode. The behaviour of the police officer is at the centre of the investigation, as he set off the fireworks without any authorisation in an area where there were numerous animals sensitive to loud noises.
