A 29-year-old Gambian citizen was apprehended by State Police in Ancona for an attempted burglary inside a flat. The incident occurred in the evening of 1 February, when residents of a building on via Flaminia noticed suspicious movements and raised the alarm.
The residents had observed signs of forced entry on the door of a ground-floor flat. Shortly afterwards, they heard noises coming from the building, confirming the presence of intruders. They then contacted the Police Headquarters' Operations Centre.
Two mobile police units went to the scene and spoke with the witnesses. Entering the building, they reached the second floor where they found a flat with the door open. Inside, voices could be heard and the sound of an electronic device.
The officers entered and found the suspect inside. Next to him were burglary tools, including an almost one-metre metal pry bar, a portable radio and everyday objects. The flat's door had been forced and the handle had been nearly torn off.
The individual could not provide a credible explanation for his presence in the premises. The officers therefore took him to Police Headquarters for further checks on his identity and the legality of his stay in Italy.
Following the verification, the young man was arrested. The duty magistrate ordered his transfer to the holding cells pending a validation hearing, which took place the following day with a positive outcome.
