A car travelling at high speed struck pedestrians and cyclists in the historic centre of Modena on Saturday 16 May. The incident left eight people injured, four of them in serious condition. The driver, a 31-year-old Italian citizen born in Morocco, then attempted to attack other people armed with a blade before being stopped.
The vehicle first hit a cyclist, then other bystanders, before its journey ended against a shop window. As people tended to the injured, the driver attempted to flee. Three men pursued him down a nearby street and, despite the attacker assaulting them with a knife, managed to restrain him.
Among the three, Luca Signorelli, a resident of Modena, recounted: "I received two stab wounds, one to the head and another that I managed to dodge. Another man grabbed his wrist, I neutralised him, end of story". The photograph of the three became viral on social networks, celebrated as heroes.
The man wounded by the knife was applauded upon arriving at hospital, where he received a visit from the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The motives behind the act remain to be clarified: the 31-year-old showed no signs of radicalisation, but rather a fragile psychological profile. Although the terrorist angle appears less likely, Bologna's counter-terrorism prosecutor announced that it would nevertheless follow the investigation.
