Crotone: multi-agency crackdown on commercial activity, fines exceed €17,000
A joint operation by law enforcement agencies targeted the centre of Crotone as part of the 'Ndrangheta Focus plan. The initiative was ordered by Police Chief Renato Panvino and coordinated by the Prefectural Office.
Police officers, Carabinieri, Financial Police, Port Authority officials and municipal police took part in the operation. Inspections covered shops, motorists and pedestrians on the main streets.
A particular inspection was conducted at a premises offering food and beverages along with a beach facility and car park. The owner had installed a platform and a canopy over 32 square metres of maritime public land without any authorisation. The area was placed under seizure.
The operator was fined for serving meals and beverages without a licence (€5,000) and for managing a beach facility without authorisation (€1,032). The Port Authority also applied a penalty for shortcomings in bather safety.
It was also discovered that a worker had no regular employment contract. The matter was referred to the Labour Inspectorate and to the mayor for suspension of the business.
During road checks, Financial Police identified a car with a counterfeit insurance policy. The vehicle was confiscated and the driver lost his driving licence for 12 months. Crime Prevention Unit officers cited a car with an expired safety inspection.
Local Police officers found a street vendor displaying fruit and vegetables on public land without a licence. The goods, 355 kilograms with an estimated value of €1,100, were confiscated and the vendor fined €5,164.
Another repair shop was operating without permission: €5,164.33 in fines and tools seized.
Overall figures: 112 individuals identified, 95 vehicles checked, 8 commercial premises inspected, 7 administrative violations totalling €17,392.33 and 2 traffic code fines.
