A 51-year-old man, a German citizen and homeless, was attacked whilst sleeping on a pavement in Florence's historic centre. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Via Pietrapiana, where several people alerted the authorities after witnessing the scene.
Officers from the rapid response unit who arrived at the scene found the victim in serious condition. The investigation revealed that the attacker, a 27-year-old Romanian national who is also homeless, struck the sleeping man at random. First with kicks directed at the head and the rest of the body, then grabbing a street sign pole and inflicting four further blows. After the violent episode, he resumed walking and moved away.
The Operations Centre, monitoring the images from the city's surveillance cameras, provided officers with a precise description of the suspect. He was located shortly after in Via Farini and stopped.
The injured 51-year-old received emergency assistance: his condition is serious but not critical. The arrested young man was taken to Sollicciano prison pending a judge's validation of the measure.
