Foggia, man arrested for murder of Giacomo Mongiello: shot dead with rifle in August 2024
Foggia State Police have arrested a 43-year-old man suspected of being responsible for the murder of Giacomo Mongiello, who was shot dead with a rifle on 2 August 2024. The suspect was identified thanks to DNA found on a cap lost during his escape.

The Mobile Squad of Foggia has arrested a 43-year-old man accused of killing Giacomo Mongiello, 45 years old, on the evening of 2 August 2024. The murder took place on streets near the centre of Foggia.
The victim was walking when an attacker dressed in black, wearing a cap and face mask, reached him from behind on a dark electric bicycle. Armed with a rifle, the assailant fired at least two shots. Mongiello was attended to and taken to hospital, where he died two days later.
Several witnesses observed the killer's escape. Surveillance cameras, both public and private, recorded the incident. During the escape, the attacker lost the cap he was wearing. The headwear was seized and analysed: genetic traces and gunshot residue were found on it.
Investigators reconstructed the relationship between the victim and the man now in custody. An anonymous telephone call to the emergency number 112, a few days after the crime, indicated this individual as the perpetrator. When questioned, he gave statements full of contradictions and refused to provide a biological sample.
The Public Prosecutor's Office ordered the forcible collection of DNA. Comparison with the genetic material on the cap produced a positive result. The suspect had planned the murder carefully: he used the electric-assisted bicycle to move quickly even on pedestrian streets, then destroyed it near his home to eliminate evidence.
The investigation required extensive work: dozens of DNA samples compared, gunshot particles enhanced on various items, more than sixty people interviewed, 218 cameras examined, surveillance of two zones with additional devices, analysis of numerous telephone records, personal, residential and computer searches. Investigators from the Central Operational Service also took part.
The Judge of the Court of Foggia issued the custodial remand order, executed today. The proceedings are at the preliminary stage; the presumption of innocence applies.
