The operation began at the port of Livorno, where control mechanisms proceeded with sampling of the shipment coming from Spain. Subsequent laboratory analysis demonstrated that the product did not meet extra virgin oil standards, but corresponded to lampante oil, which is not suitable for direct human consumption.
Lampante oil is a category of low-quality olive oil that derives from olives in an advanced stage of maturation or from oil that has undergone insufficient processing. Its illegal distribution as extra virgin constitutes a serious case of food adulteration and consumer deception.
Following the analysis results, the competent services proceeded with identification and seizure of the shipment before it could be placed on the market. The operation falls within a broader framework of intensified controls for the protection of food authenticity and quality.
