A 40-year-old private security guard killed a 39-year-old man with gunfire in the Carbonara neighbourhood of Bari. The incident occurred on the morning of 2 July, around 10 am.
The killer, Alessandro Barcellona, worked as an armed guard. His victim, Alessandro Signorile, was riding an electric bicycle and speaking with several people when he was struck. The gunman approached on a motorcycle and fired four shots with a Stoeger 9mm semi-automatic pistol. Signorile died instantly; resuscitation attempts by 118 emergency personnel proved futile.
The motive for the crime lay in a romantic relationship that had ended badly. Barcellona had discovered, approximately two or three months before the killing, that his partner was conducting a telephone relationship with the victim. Security cameras installed in the couple's home had allowed the 40-year-old to become aware of the affair. The evening before the murder, a violent argument between the two cohabiting partners led the woman to announce the end of the relationship. The following morning, a verbal altercation between Barcellona and Signorile ended with a threatening remark from the victim: "I'll settle it with her sooner or later", referring to the woman. Shortly thereafter, the shooting began.
Half an hour before the crime, the killer had sent a message to his aunt in which he foreshadowed an extreme act. Alarmed, the woman contacted the carabinieri, who managed to intercept the man not far from the Questura, where he had apparently gone to turn himself in.
During questioning, Barcellona admitted his responsibility. The investigating magistrate charged him with acting "out of jealousy and revenge". An autopsy on the victim's body will be carried out on Thursday by pathologist Biagio Solarino of Bari's Policlinico.
