The Guardia di Finanza has discovered three illegal broadband television distribution centres in Crotone, in the Calabria region, charging four suspects and seizing assets valued at approximately €650,000. This was announced on Friday by the Italian financial agency.
The operation is part of efforts to combat digital piracy ahead of the FIFA 2026 World Cup, which began on Thursday in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Italian national team did not qualify for the competition.
The network sold pirate subscriptions that provided access to paid content from platforms including Sky, DAZN, Netflix and Disney+. The prices of illegal subscriptions ranged between €10 and €40, with customer service included.
Investigators identified at least 2,769 users. Illicit proceeds were reinvested in the legitimate economy and in cryptocurrencies to conceal their origin. The four suspects, all Italian nationals, were charged with copyright infringement and self-money laundering. Users face administrative penalties ranging from €154 to €5,000, the police clarified.
