A Naples court has imposed two practising bans on cardiac surgeons for tampering with medical records following the death of a two-year-old child. The doctors had attempted to conceal therapeutic errors.
The boy suffered from a rare heart condition. A donor heart had been found, but during transport the organ had frozen due to improper cooling. The surgeons had already removed the boy's original heart before the damaged organ arrived. Despite this, they transplanted it. The boy died after weeks in a coma.
The court sentenced the female doctor to twelve months and the male doctor to seven months' practising ban for falsification of documents. The public prosecutor continues to investigate on suspicion of manslaughter.
