A 42-year-old prisoner sentenced to life imprisonment for murder has been arrested on Thursday in Italy after escaping during a supervised outing in Lower Saxony. Law enforcement traced him to a hospital in the Veneto region, where he was admitted following a traffic accident, according to the State Criminal Investigation Office.
The man had escaped on Tuesday afternoon in Peine on a motorcycle. According to Hannover's Justice Ministry, the prisoner was visiting his mother's home with a prison officer as part of his supervised release permit. He took advantage of a moment of inattention in a nearby garage to flee on a motorcycle that was parked there.
After an unsuccessful search, the State Criminal Investigation Office launched a public appeal with photographs, name and physical description of the fugitive. "Various clues eventually led investigators to a trail in Italy," the authorities stated. How the accident occurred and what injuries the man sustained were not disclosed. Italian officers arrested him directly in the hospital.
The German man is serving a life sentence for murder and aggravated attempted sexual assault. In 2010, he killed Melanie, a 23-year-old girl from Peine, with multiple stab wounds because she had refused to have sexual relations with him. In 2011, the district court in Hildesheim sentenced him to life imprisonment and also recognised the particular severity of the offence, making early release after 15 years almost impossible. According to the ministry, the man must remain in prison for at least 19 years.
