The investigation made it possible to identify Tariq El Mefeddel, with whom the woman had had a brief relationship. He had already come to the attention of the authorities due to previous reports filed by Fatimi herself. Law enforcement apprehended him in Rome within hours of the assault. The charges against him also include harassment and illegal possession of a bladed weapon.
The woman had activated the protection pathway provided for under Italian law against domestic violence, known as the "red code". Shortly before the incident, she would have spotted her ex-partner in the vicinity of her home and alerted the police. Despite the timely intervention requested, officers arrived when the victim was already deceased.
At the preliminary hearing held on Thursday, the municipality of Foggia joined the civil case together with the assistance centre for abused women that had been following the victim, as well as the woman's sister.
