Two young foreign nationals, aged 18 and 20, have been remanded in custody on the order of the judge for preliminary investigations at Palermo's Court. They are accused of assaulting and robbing two foreign visitors in the Sicilian capital.
The offence dates to the first week of May. The two tourists were returning to their hotel accommodation when, near via del Bosco, they were approached from behind. The two suspects violently blocked them, hurling them to the pavement and pushing them around.
From one of the women the robbers took a smartphone, identity documents, a payment card and cash. They attempted to steal the companion's mobile phone as well, but she resisted and forced them to flee.
Officers from the "Oreto - Stazione" police station immediately began investigations based on the victims' testimony. They gathered information about the physical appearance and clothing of the criminals, cross-referencing this data with security camera recordings from the area. This work made it possible to identify the two alleged perpetrators, who were subsequently identified by the tourists themselves.
The judge signed the arrest warrant. Tracking down the two was not straightforward: they had no fixed residence and moved between Palermo and Licata, where they had registered multiple different addresses. The investigative teams from the "Oreto - Stazione" and "Centro" police stations eventually found them and transferred them to the "Lorusso e Cutugno" prison in Pagliarelli.
It should be noted that the two arrested persons are, for the time being, only suspects and enjoy the presumption of innocence until a final conviction.
