In the historic centre of Palermo, in via Sampolo, a 53-year-old man lost his life following an attack with a sharp weapon that took place inside his own home on the morning of today, 5 July.
The assailant is one of two people living with the victim, a thirty-eight-year-old with a criminal record for offences against the person. After fatally striking his housemate, the man confined himself in the flat, opening the methane taps and threatening to blow the entire building into the air.
Military personnel from the Carabinieri promptly arrived at the scene, surrounded the building and began a lengthy mediation conducted by a negotiation specialist. After several hours of negotiation, the barricaded man agreed to surrender and was taken to the barracks in a Carabinieri vehicle.
Initial information gathered by investigators reveals that the conflict between the two tenants arose from matters of little significance, in particular concerning failure to meet rent payment deadlines. The military personnel are now deepening the investigation to clarify in detail the circumstances of the crime.
