Four Pakistani agricultural workers found charred in Calabria: two compatriots arrested
Four agricultural labourers of Pakistani origin were found dead, charred inside a minivan, at a service station in the municipality of Amendolara, in the province of Cosenza. The macabre discovery took place on Monday. The victims, employed in the agricultural harvesting sector, are believed to have been burned alive.
The investigations conducted by Italian authorities led to the detention of two individuals, also of Pakistani nationality. Investigators traced the suspects through analysis of images recorded by surveillance cameras in the area. According to the reconstruction so far, the two detainees allegedly blocked the vehicle's doors and threw an inflammable substance inside, then set the vehicle on fire.
The area of the Ionian coast in the province of Cosenza, at the southern tip of the peninsula, hosts numerous foreign workers employed in the agricultural sector, often paid very low wages. In Italy, working conditions and the treatment reserved for immigrant labourers in the primary sector are frequently subject to criticism and complaints from associations and trade unions.
