Two people have been arrested in Calabria on suspicion of killing four migrant workers, who were found dead inside a burning vehicle. The discovery was made on Tuesday afternoon near a petrol station close to Cosenza, in the heart of the southern region.
Law enforcement suspects that the victims were set alight while still alive. Security cameras in the area reportedly captured the scene: the alleged perpetrators pour inflammable liquid on the vehicle, set it on fire and prevent the occupants from getting out.
Among the deceased are three Afghan nationals and one Pakistani. The two arrested men are both Pakistani nationals. A fifth passenger, an Afghan, managed to escape from the vehicle with burns to his hands. He told local media that the attackers belong to a "vast Pakistani mafia".
The survivor, employed as a strawberry picker, shared accommodation with the victims. According to his account, the conflict erupted when the arrested men demanded money from the victims in exchange for car rides. He also recounted that his companions lived in fear of violence and worked in exchange for food and lodging.
Italian agriculture depends largely on migrant labour. In the Cosenza area, local media report tensions among foreign workers linked to the distribution of jobs and housing. In recent months, fourteen acts of arson against vehicles have been recorded in the area.
