A 29-year-old man was arrested in Rome on suspicion of attempted murder after hurling rocks and objects at vehicles passing through viale del Muro Torto. The incident occurred in the heart of the capital, from a terrace overlooking the road.
The attacker targeted several private cars but also struck a local police vehicle. The objects thrown included a stone weighing nine kilogrammes and a large log. Fortunately, despite the danger posed by the projectiles, no motorists were reported injured.
State police officers arrived at the scene, arrested the 29-year-old and took him to the police station. The man has a number of previous convictions for offences including insult, injury and assault.
Investigators are now reconstructing the exact sequence of events and assessing whether the act can be attributed to a deliberate attempted murder or whether other aggravating circumstances exist. The seizure of the thrown objects, including the stone of considerable weight and the log, will constitute key evidence for the prosecution.
