A Milanese judge has confirmed the arrest of a 52-year-old Indian citizen, believed to be the practical organiser of labour exploitation at the construction site of the new American Consulate.

A 52-year-old Indian citizen, Aji Appukuttan, has been remanded in custody after a Milanese magistrate confirmed his detention. The man played the role of practical organiser in a system of exploitation of Indian workers employed in the construction of the new diplomatic building of the United States in Piazzale Accursio.
According to the prosecution, he acted as an intermediary between the contracting firm and the workers, managing operational relations on site. The construction site is being realised by the Italian branch of Caddell Construction.
The arrest is the second in the investigation led by prosecutors Paolo Storari and Mauro Clerici, with support from officers of the Labour Inspectorate Unit. The previous week, Ulas Demir, a company executive, had been detained after being stopped at Bergamo airport whilst attempting to depart for Istanbul.
