Three employees of Malpensa airport have been arrested on suspicion of stealing valuable items from the suitcases of passengers departing from Terminal 1. The arrested men worked for an external company responsible for maintaining the baggage transport system.
Investigators from the Air Border Police, under the direction of the Busto Arsizio Public Prosecutor's Office, reconstructed approximately fifty thefts. During searches, 370 valuable items were seized, mostly branded bags and clothing, with an estimated value exceeding €300,000.
The three men carefully selected baggage to target within the sorting circuit and opened them in isolated areas, taking valuable items without the owners noticing. The victims were mainly passengers travelling to south-east Asia, who often only discovered the theft after landing. They frequently did not file a complaint in Italy, contacting only the airlines.
The investigation revealed that the stolen goods were treated as a "common fund": the items were resold to a middleman through e-commerce websites and the proceeds were then divided equally among the members of the group. Source: Questure Polizia di Stato.
