Following the Court of Cassation decision that made final his five-year prison sentence, former FS and RFI chief executive Mauro Moretti surrendered to prison yesterday evening.
Viareggio disaster: Mauro Moretti surrenders to prison
The former chief executive of Ferrovie dello Stato and RFI, Mauro Moretti, entered prison yesterday evening. The decision came after the Court of Cassation made final his conviction to five years' imprisonment for the railway disaster that occurred in Viareggio on 29 June 2009.
Moretti presented himself voluntarily to the authorities. The verdict from the Supreme Court definitively closed the judicial proceedings relating to the disaster that caused the deaths of 32 people. The accident had been caused by a diesel fuel leak from a tank wagon, followed by an explosion that destroyed some houses near the railway line.
The manager was found definitively guilty of railway disaster and multiple involuntary manslaughter. He must now serve his sentence in prison.
