A 63-year-old man shot and killed his 52-year-old wife and 24-year-old son at their home in Camaiore, in the province of Lucca, Tuscany. After committing the double homicide with a hunting rifle, he barricaded himself on the roof of the house, where he remained until the arrival of carabinieri who arrested him.
During his capture, his first statement to investigators was: "Finally, I have freed myself from their presence." Neighbours and relatives reported that tensions within the family were long-standing. The son, in particular, had written on the internet four years earlier: "It is horrible to know that your father prefers that you be dead rather than homosexual."
The young man had recently taken an interest in music, while his father appeared to frequently contest his sexual identity and complained to friends and acquaintances about the behaviour of his wife and son. The day before the tragedy, following another violent row between father and son, the mother had attempted to defend the young man. Minutes later the tragedy occurred.
