A carabinieri operation has led to the arrest of three individuals for the killing of Stefano Tomeo, shot outside a sports club in Copertino. Among them is an affiliate of the Sacra Corona Unita, already sentenced to life imprisonment but released due to health problems.

In the early hours of 2 July, the carabinieri arrested three men for the murder of Stefano Tomeo, a 50-year-old labourer killed on 11 April in Copertino, in the Lecce province. The victim was leaving a venue when he was struck by gunfire, one of the shots severing his carotid artery.
The operation resulted in three arrests: an affiliate of the Sacra Corona Unita, already sentenced to life imprisonment but at liberty for health reasons, along with a 53-year-old nurse and a relative of the life-sentenced man. The detention orders were issued by the Lecce prosecutor's office, which is also investigating an attempted extortion and two cases of harbouring a criminal.
Investigators had to work amid deafening silence: none of those present that evening called for assistance, despite the cries of the victim's friend. The investigation led to the exclusion of the local drug-dealing trail and focused instead on a dispute over a property lease, with the homeowner allegedly threatening the tenant repeatedly over unpaid bills.
Rather than reporting the matter to the authorities, the tenant allegedly sought help from the life-sentenced man, who purportedly organised the ambush together with the other two. The three are said to have met at the club shortly before the incident to finalise the plan.
