The Milan surveillance court has authorised probation with social services for Alberto Stasi, the 46-year-old man convicted of killing his girlfriend Chiara Poggi in the summer of 2007 in Garlasco, in the province of Pavia.
The ruling, made public in recent days, recognises the positive progress made by the prisoner during his years of detention. Stasi had been imprisoned since December 2015 at Bollate penitentiary, where he was serving a sixteen-year sentence. He had already obtained partial release some time ago.
In their reasons, the magistrates highlighted how the behaviour demonstrated in prison showed no danger to the public. The court deemed that the man had achieved sufficient stability to be reintegrated into society.
The probation requires compliance with rules and monitoring by social workers. Should he comply with all conditions, at the end of the prescribed period his sentence will be considered served. Among the requirements is an obligation to reside in Lombardy.
The decision is not connected to the request for trial review submitted by the defence lawyers, but falls within the provisions for those with less than four years of remaining detention.
