In the night between Friday and Saturday, in an apartment in the Pineta Sacchetti district of Rome, three members of a family originally from Bangladesh were killed with a machete. The victims are spouses Hosnejahan M. and Kamal U., together with their six-year-old daughter, Arowa. The news was reported by the Italian news agency Ansa, also picked up by Bild.
The fourth family member, their twenty-year-old eldest son, managed to escape with serious injuries and sought help in the street. He was admitted to hospital, but his life is not in danger. The young man reportedly identified the attacker: it is said to be an acquaintance of the family, Shahadat Hossain, a 43-year-old man also from Bangladesh. Italian police have launched a large-scale manhunt.
The motive for the double murder and the killing of the child has not yet been clarified. According to reports in the newspaper "La Repubblica", the killer may have been obsessed with the woman. Some neighbours reportedly heard a violent argument shortly before the massacre.
Investigators found the murder weapon in the apartment and a bloodstained hooded sweatshirt in a nearby car park. The mother and little Arowa had arrived in Italy approximately a year ago, whilst the father had been living in the country for some time. Residents of the neighbourhood remember him as a courteous and helpful person.
