In the late afternoon yesterday, in the heart of Vicenza's historic centre, a 31-year-old man assaulted a 47-year-old passer-by whilst wielding a knife. The incident occurred in contrà Pescherie Vecchie. Officers from the State Police intervened promptly and stopped the attacker, who resisted during the arrest.
The man was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery and resistance to a public official. The particularly concerning fact is that the arrested man had been released from detention only a few hours before committing the new crime.
Vicenza's mayor, Giacomo Possamai, publicly thanked the law enforcement forces for their swift and effective intervention. He reaffirmed that the city remains open to those who arrive to work, but also raised the question of the need for faster procedures for the removal of repeat offenders. He furthermore drew attention to the need for strengthening police staffing levels in the territory, a claim also shared by the local business community.
